Ramaz Mural Project
The Ramaz Mural Project was conceived for Ramaz Upper School, where Rachel is Director of the Art Department. A hands-on community based initiative, its goal is to inspire connection through making art. It is a live action place of learning where all involved (designers, painters, documentarians, and viewers) gain new perspectives on the ideas and experiences discovered in the shared environment of this educational institution. It is a living record of the meaning they are making together.
Launched in 2017, the mural takes shape with the development of paintings built upon specific artistic strategies as defined through art history. Participants propose themes that relate to academic or community pursuits (science, sports, biblical literature etc.) to integrate the murals into the scholastic ethos. The paintings will cover 9 floors in both the east and west stairways of the Upper School for a total of 18 individual wall paintings – reinforcing 18 as a symbol of life in Jewish numerology.
The process is a long-term, measured analog response to the digital age. Each participant is an architect of the shared experience. As of August 2020, there are 14 murals in process which continue to be collaboratively added to and embellished.
