HISTORY
THE MOVING COMPANY
PAST PERFORMANCES
SOCIAL PROJECT
In 2013 Tamar Ettun formed The Moving Company, a collective of artists who focused on researching movement as an expression of empathy. Over time, The Moving Company evolved from a hands-on study group to an active international performance ensemble. Tamar led the company to perform throughout New York City, New York State, The United States, Israel and Sweden.
In 2015 Tamar launched Mauve Bird with Yellow Teeth Red Feathers Green Feet and a Rose Belly, a teratology in four parts, each based on a color and an emotion - Blue/empathy, Pink/aggression, Yellow/desire, Orange/joy. The Moving Company worked with Tamar to create performances around her themes, often presenting them in conjunction with the artist's exhibitions of sculpture, photography, and video. A new installment premiered each year and the project completed in 2019 with Tamar's presentation of Part Orange, June 25-26 at Pioneer Works.
In 2019 The Moving Company returned to its roots as a collective and has been organizing performances and curating performance based events inspired by, though not under the mantel of, Tamar's artistic practice. Tamar remains a central instigator and connector for the company. The company is now lead by Rebecca Pristoop and Laura Bernstein.
Members of The Moving Company ebb and flow over time and include dancers, video artists, sculptors, actors, musicians, and a curator. Historically, most of the movers have been immigrants, which creates a complex and rich conversation around emotions and cultural heritage. As Tamar has expressed, the collaborative process is inevitably a process of negotiation and compromise, which she regards as a goal of its own.
